Alliance Military

The military structure of the Rebel Alliance is presented here. A fair amount of interpretation, synthesis, and compromise was required to make the information from disparate sources mesh into a consistent whole.

The Commander-in-Chief for both the civilian government in exile and the military arm of the Rebel Alliance is Mon Mothma (Human female). She consults closely with a group called the Alliance Advisory Council and directly oversees seven Supreme Allied Commanders.

Each of these Supreme Commanders heads up a different aspect of the Alliance military organization.

The Supreme Commands

Fleet Command (Fleet): Admiral Gial Ackbar (Mon Calamari male). The fleet command includes the collection of expensive capital ships belonging to the Alliance and thus is considered the most important element in the military.
Fleet Command has its own rank structure.

Ordnance and Supply (OaS): General Ral'Rai Muvunc (Twi'lek male). Ordnance and Supply is tasked with keeping the Fleet, Spec Force and Starfighter Commands supplied with exotic and expensive equipment. OaS is also responsible for granting and issuing Letters of Marque and Reprisal, effectively making the OaS chief the head of a rag-tag fleet of privateers composed of smugglers and mercenaries. Not everyone in the Alliance High Command approves of this aspect of the OaS mission.
OaS uses the SecCom rank structure.

Starfighter Command (StarCom): General Jan Dodonna (Human male). Starfighter Command recruits and trains pilots, assigns wings to the Fleet and to various Sector forces, and generally manages the vast number of starfighters in the Rebel Alliance inventory.
StarCom has its own rank structure.

Intelligence (Intell): General Roan Vernan (Human male). The Intelligence arm of the Rebel military mainly gathers information on Imperial activities and military movements. To this end they recruit and manage an extensive network of spies and high tech eavesdropping and electronic surveillance assets.
Intell makes use of the SecCom rank structure.

Sector Command (SecCom): General Joba Dass (Human female). The largest branch of High Command, the job of the SecCom chief is to oversee the thousands of individual Sectors, all across the galaxy, in which the civil war is raging. The structure of the Rebellion is such that control for each Sector is largely left in the hands of the local command structure. Alliance Headquarters cannot hope to keep close tabs on all developments throughout all warzones; the best they can do is try to focus their limited resources and collective efforts in key areas, using strategic partnerships.
SecCom has its own rank structure.

SpecForce Command: General Crix Madine (Human male). SpecForce recruits and trains commandos capable of succeeding at daring and difficult missions anywhere in the galaxy.
SpecForce has its own rank structure.

Support Services: General Dustil Forell (Human male). Support Services provides just that, specialty personnel and equipment to support the other branches of the Alliance military hierarchy: bulk and light freighters, cooks, doctors, mechanics, and so on.
Support Services use the SecCom rank structure.

Ranks and Insignia

The officer ranks used throughout the Rebel Alliance military structure vary somewhat, based on the branch of service discussed. The Badges shown below denote one method for displaying rank, as colored circles on a metallic background plate. The Comm column shows another method, wherein the officer's rank is displayed on the chest, right next to a personal communicator device.

All pilots in the Starfighter Command are officers. The enlisted personnel in StarCom are technicians, ground crew, and other non-pilot support personnel.

The Contribution rating for each rank is a measure of the level of trust the Alliance has in that individual, and has a bearing on the amount and type of resources an individual of a given rank can bring to bear.

Organizational Sizes

Starfighter Command
StarCom coordinates the deployment of Rebel Alliance starfighters, loaning them mostly to duty posts within the Fleet and Sector Commands. A few squadrons are also assigned to protect Alliance High Command.

The individual Sector Commands are in charge of the ground forces. It is not often that the Rebel Alliance wishes to engage in a head-to-head land battle with the Empire, but nevertheless sometimes their is simply no substitute for 'boots on the ground'.

SpecForce
There are roughly 10 divisions of SpecForce troops scattered across the galaxy at any one time. One division, the Command Division, is permanently attached to Alliance High Command and has a representative regiment of all specializations: SpaceOps, Pathfinders, Urban Combat, Wilderness Fighters, Infiltrators, Heavy Weapons, and Technicians.

Half of the non-Command divisions are assigned to a specific sector, on a sort of long term loan. Within those divisions, some regiments move around as needed within the sector, and others are attached to Sector Commands.
The other five SpecForce divisions are kept free to rapidly deploy anywhere in the galaxy.
